Tips for a Back-to-School budget

9/3/2021

With summer wrapping up, it is about the time for kids to return to school. Unfortunately, back-to-school supplies can be quite costly and can add up quickly. Although many stores run back-to-school sales, it may save you some money to spread your shopping throughout the summer. Below are a couple of ways to help you stay on budget while preparing to return to school.

  • Total up everything you need – Some school districts will give you the list of materials required for your child’s grade. Take inventory of what you have at home and what you need to buy new for the upcoming year.
  • Establish your spending limit – Like any other budget, it's important to set expectations and decide how much to spend. Some things on the school supply list are higher in cost, but you can be flexible and choose less expensive options.
  • Be a savvy shopper – Besides getting great deals, you can do a few other things. Don’t be afraid to buy generic brands. They usually last the same as the famous brands. Compare prices on items at different stores. Take advantage of coupons or cashback offers on school supplies!
  • Customize school supplies (DIY) - Consider purchasing generic items and customizing them yourself with stickers of your child's favorite characters. You could also glue on things like gems, patches, and more!
