Flood Damage Scams

6/30/2021

Over the last week, we have seen abnormally high levels of flooding in Michigan. Unfortunately, in many situations, events happen that present an opportunity for scammers. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warns Michigan residents to beware of scam artists and price-gougers who will try to take advantage of desperate home and vehicle owners in the next several days and weeks.

Scams to watch out for include:

  • Price-gouging by towing companies.
  • Contractors offering to help clean up after all the storms.
  • Other similar types of scams.

Drivers have the right to challenge whether your vehicle was towed correctly and the reasonableness of towing and storage fees, but you must do so promptly and in an appropriate district court. You can read the full release here.
