Beware of Scams

3/26/2020

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has received many calls reporting potential scams. The Suspected scammers continue to contact residents in our communities attempting to gather money and personal information. These scams include, but are not limited to:

  • Family Scams - Where the scammer says they are a distant family member and need money (cash or gift cards) because they are in trouble. The scammers are normally out of state.
  • Court/Jury/Subpeona Scams - Where the scammer tells the recipient they are with a local law enforcement agency, a local and/or federal court and because the recipient failed to comply with a court appearance, a jury duty summons, or a subpoena they will have to pay a fine or be subject to arrest by these entities.
  • IRS Scams - Where the scammer tells the recipient they are from the IRS and asks the recipient for personal information which includes date of birth, address, phone number, and social security number in order to process their tax return.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office urges residents not to provide any personal information to these scammers and to verify the identity of anyone attempting to solicit money or other information.
