American 1 Credit Union is pleased to announce that Chief Employee Experience Officer Tonia White has recently joined the Jackson YMCA Board of Directors.
White, a dedicated American 1 employee, helps lead initiatives to move American 1 forward linked to the credit union’s core values. Prior to White’s employment, American 1 newly implemented a strategy to hire the “right person, right seat,” ensuring employees can succeed in their roles while also retaining the company’s strong focus on community. Since her first day on the job, White has been instrumental in helping maintain this very important strategy.
“I am honored to work for a company that values its members and the local community,” White said. “Like American 1, the YMCA has always tried to be reflective of the communities it serves. I have strong roots in Jackson and have lived here my entire life, and I’m excited to now join the YMCA Board of Directors.”
Jackson YMCA CEO Shawna Tello could not be happier that White has joined the board.
“It is vital to our mission that our board members are not only experts in their professions but also are connected to our community,” Tello said. “Not only does Tonia add valuable human resource and customer service experience, but she also brings a wealth of knowledge of our community members, particularly those living in the Y neighborhood, thanks to her volunteer work. She will be a tremendous asset for our YMCA.”
White added that she is extremely proud of American 1 for its ongoing support of the YMCA. Not only did American 1 donate $600,000 to the YMCA’s Capital Campaign in 2019, but the credit union also donated $1,250 in 2020 for essential cleaning supplies for the Y’s childcare program in collaboration with Jackson Public Schools.
Martha Fuerstenau, President/CEO of American 1 Credit Union, said she wants to extend her congratulations to White for joining the board.
“Tonia’s hard work and commitment, as well as her strong management and customer service skills, go well beyond a Monday to Friday work schedule,” Fuerstenau said. “She gives her all in everything she does and is always looking for new ways to help others. Tonia will excel in this position and the YMCA community will benefit from her service.”
In addition to her experience with American 1 and the Jackson YMCA, she dedicates several hours a month to help in other areas throughout Jackson, including serving on the Jackson Downtown Development Authority board and volunteering with the Salvation Army and Martin Luther King Center.
“I am blessed to work for a company that encourages volunteering,” White said. “My advice to others who want to get involved with their community is to take that first step. Put yourself out there, find what areas need assistance, and go for it.”
Established in 1950, American 1 Credit Union today serves over 59,000 members with branches in Jackson, Washtenaw, Hillsdale, Calhoun, Lenawee, and Wayne counties. American 1 is proud to serve the members of their communities by creating financial wellness through personal everyday banking.
