Protect Yourself from Fraudulent Calls Claiming to Be Your Credit Union

Credit union members may receive scam calls from criminals impersonating credit union representatives. These calls are part of a type of scam called "vishing" or "voice phishing". Scammers use "spoofing" to make their calls appear to be from the credit union. They may claim there is an issue with your account, such as unauthorized transactions or overdrafts, and ask for personal information or account credentials.

To protect yourself from these scams, you can:

  • Verify the caller's identity
  • If you receive a call about an urgent account issue, hang up and call your credit union using a trusted number. You can find this number on your debit or credit card, account statement, or official correspondence.
  • Don't share personal information
  • Never give out personal or account information to anyone who calls you, even if they claim it's for "verification purposes".
  • Be aware of red flags

American 1 will never:

  • Contact you through FaceTime, WhatsApp, or with iCloud email addresses
  • Ask you to transfer money through third-party services like CashApp, Apple Cash, or Venmo
  • Ask you to buy gift cards or send digital currency like Bitcoin
  • Ask for your full credit or debit card numbers or your online banking information,

You can also report unwanted calls to the National Do Not Call Registry (.gov). If you suspect you've been a victim of fraud, you can report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
